Breeding Habits
Mosquitoes breed in both fresh and saltwater. Permanent water eggs (e.g. Culex, Anopheles) are laid directly on ponds, pools or streams and hatch after incubation. Floodwater eggs (e.g. Psorophora, Aedes, Ochlerotatus) are laid on moist soil, like the soil around ditches, floodplains, depressions and upper marsh.
Natural breeding sites for mosquitoes include rock holes, water holding plants and tree lines. In order to eliminate any artificial breeding sites, it is recommended to clean rain gutters regularly, eliminate collecting water from pool or boat covers, and get rid of birdbaths and drain ditches. |
